Limerick Unit 2 Returns to Service Following Maintenance Outage

Friday, Mar 12, 2010

Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 resumed producing electricity at 2:26 PM EST Wednesday, March 10 following a planned maintenance outage.

Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station Unit 2 resumed producing electricity at 2:26 PM EST Wednesday, March 10 following a planned maintenance outage.

The Unit 2 generator was taken offline at 5:38 AM Tuesday, March 9 to allow station personnel to make repairs to the Stator Water Cooling (SWC) system on the non-nuclear side of the plant.  The SWC provides cooling water to several components within the turbine generator.

“Station personnel have safely completed all of the necessary repairs,” said Chris Mudrick, Limerick site vice president. “These repairs were necessary to ensure reliability through the remainder of our operating cycle, especially the peak summer period.”

Limerick Unit 1 continued to generate electricity during the Unit 2 maintenance outage. Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  With both units at full power, the site can produce enough carbon-free electricity for 2 million homes.
